In September, 22, 1782, in the 20th anniversary celebrations since Ekaterina II. came to power, a new Russian order was instituted. It was called St. Vladimir Order, in honor of Vladimir, the son of Svjatoslav Igorevitch (Great Kiev duke). St. Vladimir Order was instituted as a decoration for military and civil services. There were no restrictions in decoration with the each of four order degrees. Everyone who really deserved it, certainly took it. For military services during the Great Patriotic War the first degree of St. Vladimir Order was invested to 12 men. Among them are A. Osterman - Tolstoj, P. Konovitsyn, N. Raevsky, Suvorov's nephew - A. Gorchakov, A. Kolovogrivov. St. Vladimir Order of the 2-d degree was invested 95 times. St. Vladimir Order of the 3-d degree was instituted at the time of the Great Patriotic War about hundreds of times. Among those, instituted with the order, were the following names: S. Volkonsky, D. Davydov, R. Bagration (P. Bagration's brother), A. Bistrom, A. Seslavin. St. Vladimir Order of the 4th degree with a bow is an officer decoration. This order was highly valued among Russian officers. One could get it only for the personal courage and military skills. This order was instituted to S. Volkonsky for the courage in his first battle and Ja. Kulnev, the hero of for Great Patriotic War of 1812, for distinguished services in the battle with the French.
